Continuing Research: EMEND 2.0

As many of the original EMEND researchers have transitioned into retirement, efforts are underway to embark on the next phase with EMEND 2.0. Current researchers are developing a proposal to support ongoing development and long-term research to ensure a seamless transition and the continuation of this valuable work.

Envisioning the Future of EMEND

The Envisioning EMEND workshop, held in Edmonton in Fall 2024, brought together researchers, industry professionals and government decision-makers to envision the future of EMEND. Participants reflected on core outcomes and explored current and future opportunities in biodiversity, silviculture and ecosystem-based management. Participants worked to articulate and prioritize ideas for advancing EMEND 2.0 as it progresses through a full forest rotation.

Emend Database

The EMEND partners are proud of the core data set that has amassed as a result of this project. It is one of the largest and most complete databases on boreal forest ecosystems in the world. A variety of Core Data sets and compartment level summaries are available to EMEND participants once a data-use agreement has been approved.

The EMEND data base is maintained by the Canadian Forest Service and is housed at the Northern Forestry Centre in Edmonton, AB. All EMEND participants can gain access to the database after becoming registered users. Contact the database manager, Brad Tomm (bradley.tomm@canada.ca), to register.

All researchers and students are encouraged to deposit their data into the database for archiving purposes.
